About Counselling

Counselling or Psychotherapy has its modern roots with Sigmund Freud who first discovered that talking to clients over a period of time and working at discovering their processes for living could make a difference to their lives. Subsequent variations to Freud's work have allowed many hundreds of different types of counselling to flourish. Generally it's about two people, a Counsellor and a client, working together to find out what it is that the client needs to change in order to help them live a fulfilled life.

What Conditions Can it Help?

If you feel something is missing or "not quite right" with your life then I believe Counselling can help. People discover all sorts of things about themselves in counselling. Commonly it can be used to help with different forms of depression or the conditions that have given rise to the depression. This can be conditions such as;
  • Bullying
  • Addictions
  • Stress related illness
  • Relationship issues
  • Grief

    This names just a few but I believe it can be worth consulting a trained Counsellor to see if they can help with almost any of lifes issues.

    What Benefits can be Expected?

    Many clients who have been through the Counselling process report feeling happier, less stressed and able to live life more fully. Their close relationships can be more fulfilled and life feels generally better.

    Counselling or Psychotherapy?
    The difference between a Counsellor and a Psychotherapist are not easy to define. Even the BACP does not distinguish between the two titles and hence I currently use both titles. This may change in the future as the profession is to be regulated and these terms will become protected. In general terms though for most client issues there is little difference, it's the relationship between the therapist and the client that is important.
